Mixed Media Butterfly

Hello and happy Wednesday AJVD fans!  Rosemary here for my final guest designer spot here on the blog.  I have had alot of fun and want to give a big thank you to Jillian and Bunny for having me!  I'm sharing one more project that I created using the Fresh Florals:  Cascade.  My project today is a mixed media one.  I hope you like it!  I'm going to add this to the Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge of wild and wonderful.

I know alot of you have seen those beautiful butterfly stamps where half the butterfly is floral and the other half is a butterfly.  When I saw the card that Bunny made using the Fresh Florals: Cascade stamp set and the Bold Butterfly die I immediately thought about doing something similar, but in a mixed media format.   I don't have lots of photos to share because this is my second time really creating a mixed media piece and so I was just focused on getting it completed.  I used the largest vignette box from Tim Holtz and painted it with white paint.  I added some butterfly washi tape to the edges (you will see that in a second photo) and then sealed it with collage medium.  I trimmed down a piece of patterned paper from P13 to fit the vignette box (I flipped the box over to use the back as the front) and then distressed the edges.  I used a distress crayon in shabby shutters (green) around the edges of the paper and then used my finger to rub it in.  Once I had the piece to my liking I adhered it to the box with collage medium and let it dry.   Before adhering the paper to the box I did stamp the floral image on the paper with a very light gray ink.  I then stamped the image on additional patterned paper and vellum.  When I stamped the image on the vellum I used watermark ink and heat embossed with Kitsch Flamingo distress glaze.  I then die cut each image and added distressing with my distress tool and more Shabby Shutters distress crayon.   By the time I finished the collage medium had dried and so I added some crackle texture paste and then sprinkled on Kitsch Flamingo and Fossilized Amber distress glazes.    Most of it did not stick, but I liked the look of just a hint of the distress glaze.  Once that was dry I heated the distress glaze.  I finished by adding some distress watermark ink, sprinkling on more distress glaze in the Kitsch Flamingo and Fossilized Amber and then heat setting.

Here is a side view where you can see a hint of the washi tape and some of the crackle and distress glaze, as well as the layers of the butterfly.  I die cut just the body of the Beautiful Butterfly from pink patterned paper and then trimmed off what I didn't need.  The body was adhered with collage medium and left to dry.  I then added the layers of the butterfly placing the patterned paper one down first.  I secured it only where it met the body.   The same was done with the vellum layer.   I had some large rhinestone embellishments, so I decided to add those to the body.  I even rubbed them with some of the Shabby Shutters distress crayon!  The finishing element was the sentiment from the Bold Butterfly stamp set that I embossed on vellum with the Kitsch Flamingo distress glaze.  Shabby Shutters distress crayon was rubbed on the piece, as well.
